NORDUnet Next Generation Network

Since the fall of 2017, NORDUnet and the Nordic NREN have worked on plans for a next generation NORDUnet network for the Nordic countries. The nextwork will take advantage of recent breakthroughs in optical networking, such as Open Line Systems, spectrum sharing, and Data Center Interconnect (DCI) equipment. These technologies will allow NORDUnet to take full advantage of the existing fibre footprints and existing optical network of the Nordic NRENs, and allow NORDUnet and the Nordic NRENs to jointly work to develop a comprehensive fibre footprint.

The approach allows the partners to each develop, procure, and operate a national optical network platform, yet through coordination and sharing achive increased efficiency and lower cost, both for the national networks and NORDUnet. For NORDUnet, the objecive is to remain an independent optical network platform for the Nordic area, the baltic region and north-west Europe, but without (or with minimal) independent fibre footprint. Outside the Nordic region, this vision will be realised through collaboration with European partner NRENs and GÉANT.

The project has completed infrastrucrure and technology assesment, and is currently in the design phase. Watch the video below for an in-depth presentation by Jørgen Qvist, CNOO at NORDUnet.
