Major step forward for the GREN

Major step forward for the GREN

NORDUnet is excited to learn about a major advance in high-speed research and education networks in the Asia Pacific Oceania region, undertaken by eleven global leaders in R&E networking from around the Pacific Ocean.

The Asia Pacific Oceania network (APOnet) collaboration will connect East Asia, Southeast Asia, Oceania, and North America.

APOnet is the successor to the Asia-Pacific Ring (APR) collaboration, significantly enlarging the shared intercontinental infrastructure for Research & Education across the Pacific Ocean, as part of the Global Research & Education Network (GREN). APOnet is similar to the Advanced North-Atlantic (ANA) Collaboration, to which NORDUnet is a partner, and shows what willing and able R&E Networks can do together, synchronizing and leveraging each other’s investments in connectivity.

The networks and organizations involved in APOnet are:

  • Australia’s Academic and Research Network (AARNet)
  • Arterial Research and Educational Network in Asia-Pacific (ARENA-PAC),
  • University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development d/b/a (Internet2),
  • Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI),
  • National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT),
  • National Institute of Informatics (NII),
  • Singapore Advanced Research and Education Network (SingAREN),
  • Pacific Wave International Exchange
  • Research and Education Advanced Network New Zealand (REANNZ)
  • TransPAC, and
  • University of Hawaii (UH).
