Description
Time distribution has traditionally relied on satellite-based synchronization via GNSS. Over the past decade, dedicated optical links have been deployed, enabling ultra-precise time and frequency transfer over fiber. In today’s evolving security landscape, the need for resilient and independent timing infrastructure is more critical than ever. This session explores the development of national R&E time and frequency networks and efforts to interconnect the Nordic region—and eventually the rest of Europe. We also present the future outlook of the ongoing incubator project driving this initiative forward. Agenda - T&F ideas/feedback from the Monday's workshop (Lars Fischer, NORDUnet and Jani Myyry, CSC) 30 min - T&F incubator project & Nordic T&F network (Raimena Veisllari, SIKT) 30 min - Nation-wide T&F network (Harald Hauglin, JV) 30 min

NRENS4Education – improving student interoperability in Europe
- Everest 3
- Wednesday, Sep 10 2025 11:00 - 12:30
- Track
- Track 3
Description
How can NRENS contribute to student mobility in Europe? European students face a stark contradiction: while policy frameworks promote a borderless European Education Area, the digital reality creates significant barriers to mobility. NRENs, embedded in the national education ecosystem in each EU country, are uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between European policy and local implementation. They are experienced in delivering interoperable, secure, and scalable digital services for the research and education sector and understand the needs of the HEI’s as well as students. NRENs can validate the developed solutions on a national level. By leveraging their existing infrastructure and expertise, NRENs can provide a federated approach that respects national diversity and institutional autonomy while enabling seamless, cross-border collaboration. This approach is more efficient and less risky than developing new solutions from scratch. A group of European NRENs will start with addressing three urgent use cases from the Higher Education Interoperability Framework (HEIF): Discover: Enabling students to easily find learning opportunities that suit their specific needs across Europe. User Identity: Ensuring seamless and secure identity management for students and staff. Apply and Get Recognition: Simplifying the application and recognition process for courses taken abroad.

Media Services “strategy” BOF -NRENs only

- Everest 2

- Side meeting T2
Description
Background The Nordic Media Group (NMG) currently serves an important function in the operational coordination of media services across the Nordic NRENs. The group meets weekly and focuses on technical operations, troubleshooting and immediate issues. However, there is currently no structured forum for strategic coordination between NRENs and NORDUnet concerning long-term planning, roadmaps and development of media services. The Feather We propose the creation of a strategic forum under the name NMG-S (NMG Strategic Forum), as a complement to the existing operational NMG structure. The purpose is to enable long-term, Nordic-level coordination around media services development, sector needs, and strategic alignment. The Bird The scope of the BOF is to discuss the proposal and see if we can agree a scope and mandate that will allow us to progress the establishment of a NMG-S (NMG Strategic Forum)

- Track 3
Description
Exercises among security people in the research and education sector are mandatory. The single NREN Cert does their own exercises on a regular basis, but are they also conducted in bilateral or multilateral corporation between universities and eventually in participation with the relevant CSIRT/CERT? Are we ready to coordinate an incident with sister universities in our country? In this workshop we will share experiences and knowledge how to organize, plan and execute exercises in our sector. DKCERT will facilitate the workshop based on a presentation of two years of table top exercises with participation of the CISOs of all 8 universities in Denmark and we will discuss the relevance of having cross nordic NREN CERT-exercises. In order to make this workshop valuable: As a Nordic NREN CERT, please bring your own EEE – emergency exercise experiences - and prepare a 5 minutes talk about your recent learnings.

Description
Research networks have developed expertise in optical networking since the early 2000s. Light properties such as phase and scattering have traditionally supported data transport and fiber monitoring, but these phenomena can also be harnessed to extract environmental changes. Over the past five years, fiber optic sensing has rapidly evolved from concept to practice, with multiple NRENs now actively engaged in the field. This session presents researchers' experiences, outlines requirements for NREN network planning, and explores data analysis approaches using machine learning and AI. Agenda Bornholm cable monitoring with DAS, seismology (Aurelien Mordret, GEUS, online presentation) 30 min - Preparing NREN network for sensing (Kurosh Bozorgebrahimi, SIKT and Magnus Bergroth, SUNET) 30 min - Sensing data analysis & AI (Witold Taisner, PSNC and Kajetan Kubic, PSNC) 30 min

Trust & Identity 2 - From national federations to wallets
- Everest 2

- Track
- Track 2
Description
As the large-scale pilots on wallets are coming to an end, it would be valuable to understand which infrastructure is needed to use ID wallets in parallel to what is needed for research and education. The aim is to start a Nordic pilot to reuse as much as possible what is being used in the large scale pilot. The first aspect of the pilot would be to design an architecture; this architecture should allow each Nordic country to use their ‘preferred’ wallets. The main output of the pilot would be: - give NRENs an understanding on how the the wallets will work - assess how to use national infra for research - understand how much synergy there could be with the gov wallets - understand what kind of credential we can be used - start to look at interop aspects across countries from the wallet perspective and credential perspective. - agree on a timeline for the pilot.

Trust & Identity 3 -Federating via OpenID Federation
- Everest 2

- Track 2
Description
For over two decades, SAML has been a cornerstone of our community, and it will continue to serve us for some time. However, as the protocol is now considered legacy, it's time to explore its successor. OpenID Connect and OAuth2 have dominated discussions for the past decade, yet they have primarily relied on bilateral configurations rather than the federated approach our community is accustomed to. With the introduction of OpenID Federation (OIDF), this is set to change, enabling scalable implementations of OpenID Connect and OAuth2. This session will introduce the new kid on the block and explore how we might integrate it into eduGAIN as a parallel solution, coexisting with the established SAML federation.
