Last mile - remote regions
- Room: Dræggen 8
- Wednesday, Sep 11 2024 16:00 - 17:30
- Track
- Track 2
Description
The last-mile of the end-to-end path is often the most challenging, especially in remote or underdeveloped areas where infrastructure is poor and return on investment can be low. As a result, end-users and science instruments in remote areas suffer from slower, less reliable connectivity or may lack access altogether. This session will feature talks on how 5G, LEOSat, and LoraWAN are being implemented to extend NREN services into remote regions, and on how the NREN community is working together to address last-mile challenges.

“Outreach” is defined by the Cambridge Dictionary as “an effort to bring services or information to people where they live or spend time.” This session will explore how we, as NRENs, tackle the ongoing challenge of effectively communicating our services, value, and the actual work of the NREN and R&E communities to audiences beyond our immediate circles. To safeguard that our community continues to evolve and stay relevant we must make sure to help our stakeholders recognize the unique position of the NRENs and the R&E community in addressing emerging challenges.

Research in networks
- Room: Kongesalen
- Thursday, Sep 12 2024 11:00 - 12:30
- Track
- Track 1
Description
In this session we will review emerging technologies and key new concepts in research and education networking. Research and education networks keep growing - in scope, in reach, in capacity. At the same time, user expectations - flexibility, availability, ubiquity, ease of use - have increased. The result is growing complexity and strict operational standards. In response, NRENs are looking into technologies and design patterns that will help manage complexity and allow network engineers to focus on the strength of NREN networks: the ability to service demanding users with bursty traffic, wherever they are. The session will give example of key concepts - automation, workflows management, orchestration, telemetry, AI support - that are being explored and increasingly exploited. We will offer food for thought and inspire conversation among the participants.
