Nordic active participation at TNC17

Nordic active participation at TNC17

tuesday

NORDUnet and the Nordic NRENs have had an active opening of the TNC 2017 conference in Linz. Tuesday morning saw Nordic engagement in the  “In-the-Field-blog” BoF discussing  content, impact and possible improvements. Learn more about In-the-Field.

After lunch Olav Kvittem from UNINETT took the stage for his Lightning Talk – five fast minutes where he presented his project focusing on measuring network outages on fine grained scale. These outages result in rerouting affecting our quality of experience on the web. Hence the headline of Olav’s talk: Routing sucks.

The Lightning Talk session featured another initiative with Nordic participation: eduVPN. Rogier Spoor from SURFnet presented the new eduVPN service, providing safe access to the web on Internet hotspots. Initiated by SURFnet eduVPN is now a joint NREN effort with NORDUnet and DeiC as two of the partners. SURFnet is deploying a version 1.0 of the eduVPN service 1 July with Windows and MacOS clients. Next version is supposed to be ready around October including updated clients and a new Linux client as well as first gen. apps for IoS and Android.

The Networking For Clouds session featured Lars Fischer from NORDUnet presenting aspects of connecting to – and networking for – cloud providers. Together with Afrodite Sevast, GRNET, and Edoardo Martelli, CERN, Lars presented recent work in the area to stimulate discussion and development in the community.rs of cloud services.

Finally, at the Identity LEGO session, Andreas Solberg from UNINETT got a wide range of technical questions for his presentation of Dataporten, the UNINETT API Platform for authorization, groups and data sharing. Dataporten is an expansion of the identity ecosystem Feide, and clearly a lot of other people in the community are working on similar projects. Dataporten has been in production since March 2016 and 38 institutions are already using the service.
