Today the inaugural meeting of the Special Interest Group on Artificial Intelligence for NRENs (SIG-AI) was held in Poznań, Poland, hosten by Polish NREN PSNC. SIG-AI has been created to allow European Research and Education Networks (NRENs) to come together and share experience and emerging best practices in the application of AI tools in NREN services and operations.
The first meeting of the special interest group brought together professionals knowledgeable in AI from across the NREN community to share experiences from experiments and deployments, to raise awareness of ongoing activities and opportunities, and notably to build human network among professionals active in the area.
Lars Lund Thomsen represented NORDUnet with a presentation on integrating AI into our Media services. He shared insights into the design and implementation of NORDUnet’s API infrastructure, which leverages OpenAI’s Whisper technology to create video subtitles in multiple languages, allowing NORDUnet’s partners and customers to enhance accessibility of hosted videos and educational ressources. Lars highlighted the importance of sustainable AI solutions that benefit the entire Nordic community, reflecting NORDUnet’s commitment to collaboration and innovation.
Participants gained valuable knowledge about the project’s design decisions and its current progress, sparking discussions on how AI can sustainably support NRENs in areas such as cybersecurity, network management, and advanced services.
To NORDUnet, the SIG-AI meeting was a significant step in fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing, setting the stage for future advancements in AI applications within the NREN ecosystem.
