Alien Wavelength – pros and cons

Per Nihlén CTO of Swedish Sunet contributed to a lively discussion on the Tuesday TNC2016 session “Alien Wavelengths – from field trials to commercial services”. Presenting the new Sunet network, developed in cooperation with NORDUnet, he described in detail how the network is using Alien Wave technology. After his presentation he took part in a panel discussion including both vendors, consultants and NREN representatives. A quite lively discussion about the pros and cons of Alien Wave took place, focusing among other things on the difficulties of turning the technology into a commercial product and on the high degree of trust required between partners to make it all happen.
