Obstacles to Global Integration

Obstacles to Global Integration

At the 2014 NORDUnet conference in Uppsala, Sweden, NORDUnet CEO René Buch gave a keynote speech on the importance  – and challenges – of creating global integration of research and education networks and their services.  Building on examples from recent developments on global R&E infrastructure, the talk outlines key challenges such as non-deregulated telecom incumbents, lack of global vision of funding agencies, unneccesary connectivity and use policies, differences in procurement legislation, and the not-invented-here syndrome.  The talk offers strategies for overcoming these obstracles in the pursuit of global service integration among research and education networks, based on current initiatives of fast-moving and advanced R&E networks.
