Polar Connect at Submarine Networks World 2023

Polar Connect at Submarine Networks World 2023

This week Jonny Lundin of NORDUnet presented the Polar Connect vision to a global audience at the Submarine Networks World conference in Singapore.

In his talk on Arctic connectivity, Creating Reducancies in the Global Cable Systems, Jonny highlighted the current challenges in Europe – Asia connectivity. He stressed the need to increase both capacity and resilience in response to the rapid growth of demand between these regions.

As a mitigation for these challenges, the presentation outlined the NORDUnet’s Vision 2030 for enhancing Asia to Europe connectivity by leveraging the Arctic routes. The talk pointed to technical challenges and engineering solutions associated with this ambitious plan. Additional benefits of deploying cables with advanced sensing capabilities in the Arctic were also introduced. Concluding his talk, Jonny emphasised the growing consensus on the benefits of Arctic connectivity and invited Asian partners to consider the polar options as a natural element of the global submarine cable system’s future.
