Promoting Clixon for Network Automation at CENIC 2024

At the 2024 CENIC conference in Monterey, CA, on 25-27 March 2024, experts from ESnet, Internet2, NORDUnet will join a panel to discuss the latest trends and innovations in network automation and orchestration.

Network orchestration plays a key role in creating a reliable network and handling modern operational challenges. ESnet, Internet2, and NORDUnet leverage network orchestration to automate large parts of their network deployment and operation. All three organizations started with very similar technological approaches but advanced their software tooling in different directions.

The panel will feature Marc Koerner (ESnet), Karl Newell (Internet2) and Johannes Garm Houen (NORDUnet). The panel will be moderated by NORDUnet’s Markus Krogh.

Panel participants will elaborate on the benefits of network orchestration and discuss the commonalities of their solutions and where their approaches diverge. Johannes will speak about his experience developing automation services for Clixon, an open source network automation tool recently adapted by SUNET and NORDUnet for multi device deployments, and will also highlight the value of  targeted development of open source tools and the importance of collaboration with global partners in the networking community to drive innovation and overcome common challenges

The panel will hopefully offer a forum for discussion with the audience around different requirement-driven approaches and the established tooling. For NORDUnet, this is one of the first opportunities to expose the Clixon software tool to a larger, international audience.

CENIC (Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California) is the research and education statewide network for the west coast region of USA. The CENIC conference is an annual event, bringing together an experts in high-performance networking.
