Milestone for European open science

Milestone for European open science

NORDUnet celebrates the launch of the EOSC EU Node

The EOSC (European Open Science Cloud) EU Node was officially launched today during the EOSC Symposium 2024 in Berlin, Germany, following the technical presentation in Brussels on October 10th. This is a major milestone for the advancement towards the implementation of a global interoperable platform to enhance multi-disciplinary and multi-national open science research across Europe.

The EU node is the first reference implementation of a platform designed to streamline access to scientific data, publications, software, and services. A user-friendly journey across the EOSC EU node enables users to access the available services in a federated manner  and used them based on user credits.

The EOSC node represents the first step towards the creation of the EOSC Federation. The EOSC EU Node provides a blueprint for the creation of national/regional/thematic nodes that are expected to be deployed and federate with the EOSC EU Node. This structured approach facilitates an open and interconnected research ecosystem across Europe.

Long-standing partnership

NORDUnet contributes to the EOSC EU Node as a contractor of Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center (PSNC), which was awarded two out of the three lots in the public procurement for the EU Node service delivery.

NORDUnet is proud to be on this procurement together with PSNC, a long-standing partner. We are also proud to expand our capabilities and expertise above the network to support open science,” says Valter Nordh, NORDUnet CEO.

NORDUnet supports the service delivery and service management and represents the Norwegian Agency for Shared Services in Education and Research (Sikt) that delivers a  Large File Transfer Service, and the Swedish Research Council / SUNET that deliver secure, carbon-neutral data centre facilities as well as provide resources to strengthen the security team.

A digital platform for open science

The EOSC EU NODE is a service procured by the European Commission to create a digital platform that enables researchers across Europe to collaborate more effectively and drive progress in Open Science.

The procurement encompasses three areas (lots):

  • Firstly, the delivery of the core federation services, which includes the Web Portal Front Office, the Federated Identity Management and Single-Sign-On solution, Accounting, Monitoring and others.
  • Secondly, the delivery of the Exchange Infrastructure Services for the EOSC EU Node, which provides fully managed infrastructure services components of the EOSC EU Node including Managed Container service, Managed Compute (Virtual Machine) service and Managed Bulk Data Transfer service.
  • And thirdly, delivery of the Exchange Application Services for the EOSC EU Node, which provides fully managed services for the application services component of the EOSC EU Node including Managed File Synchronization and Sharing service, Interactive Notebooks service, and Managed Large File Transfer service for end-users.

NORDUnet is a contractor for the second and third lots. The contract started in February 2024 for a three-year period.

More info on the EOSC EU Node is available at the European Commission website.
