NORDUnet Partners in Building EuroHPC Federation Platform

NORDUnet is proud to be part of the CSC-led consortium awarded the contract to deliver and operate the EuroHPC Federation Platform (EFP). This initiative, commissioned by the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU), will integrate Europe’s supercomputing, quantum computing, and data resources into a unified, scalable, and secure environment.

Enhancing Federated Infrastructure Across Europe

The EuroHPC Federation Platform will streamline access to the 14 EuroHPC JU supercomputers and quantum systems, including the LUMI supercomputer located at CSC’s data center in Kajaani, Finland. By providing a single sign-on system, researchers and industries across Europe will be able to seamlessly access these high-performance resources. This user-centric platform will simplify workflows, unify resource views, and improve the accessibility of these powerful systems.

NORDUnet will leverage its expertise in operating federated infrastructures for the research and education community. NORDUnet in collaboration with its members DeiC and the Swedish Research Council, will support GÉANT, in delivering the federated Authentication and Authorization Infrastructure (AAI) and monitoring the development of innovative authentication technologies.

A Unified Platform for European Innovation

The EuroHPC Federation Platform is designed to serve a wide range of European users, including public sector organizations, academia, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The platform will provide:

  • Seamless Access: A single access point to EuroHPC supercomputing resources, future AI factories, and quantum computing systems.
  • Integrated Solutions: Federated access to data lakes and data spaces across Europe, incorporating private and public solutions like SIMPL, EOSC, and FENIX.
  • Scalability and Security: A modular architecture based on open-source technologies to ensure flexibility and prevent vendor lock-in.

A collaborative effort

The consortium includes CSC (the leading organisation), GÉANT, NORDUnet, University of Tartu, Ghent University and VSB Technical University of Ostrava IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Center.

The EuroHPC Federation Platform service has a budget of EUR 19.997 million from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) program. The platform’s development will begin in early 2025 and will be provided  for five years.

Empowering European Research and Innovation

As part of this transformative service, NORDUnet’s role underscores its commitment to advancing European research and education. By contributing its specialized knowledge, NORDUnet is helping to build a secure and scalable platform that will foster innovation, collaboration, and scientific breakthroughs across Europe. In doing so, NORDUnet will leverage syngery with the AARC TREE project coordinated by NORDUnet, funded by the Horizon Europe programme of the European Commission.
