Towards Vision 2030 for Polar Connect

Towards Vision 2030 for Polar Connect

In the past few weeks, NORDUnet has been promoting the idea of subsea cables across the Arctic Ocean to connect Europe, Asia and the North American West Coast at the GÉANT and European NREN conference TNC22, and at the annual meeting of European telecoms regulators EuroDIG.

Trans-Arctic cables will give Europe resilience, digital autonomy, and shorter connections to key global partners, including Japan, and will further spur the development of green data centres in the connected regions. It is therefore essential for the realisation of the ambitions in the European Data Gateways Declaration.

Getting direct, inter-continental optical fibre connectivity through the Arctic is an ambitions plan. We look forward to working with our Nordic, European, Asian, and North American partners to realise it in the coming years.

Read more about the societal benefits of building arctic subsea cables in the Copenhagen Ecomomics report  The Economic Value of Submarine Cables in the Arctic.
