Precision timing is moving beyond the lab and into operational networks. At a recent workshop hosted by NORDUnet and SUNET, engineers from Nordic National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) and National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) came together to focus on deploying high-accuracy timing infrastructure across borders.
The sessions centred on wide-area synchronisation using White Rabbit technology, with a strong emphasis on real-world operation. Discussions and hands-on work explored device management, switch calibration, and the challenges of maintaining accuracy over long-distance fibre networks.
Participants worked directly with White Rabbit switches, gaining practical insight into configuration and performance in production-like environments, and knowledge of how to manage devices and timing services.
The workshop is part of the Nordic Timing Summit, a joint effort to establish a cross-border timing network across Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark, with further integration toward mainland Europe. By building on dedicated research and education network infrastructure, the collaboration is advancing secure, resilient, and independent timing services—bringing metrology and network engineering closer together in practice.
